A 6.4 MWh BESS and solar carport solution protecting thousands of residents from load shedding.

The Blyde is one of South Africa's most prestigious lifestyle estates, developed by Balwin Properties in Pretoria East, Gauteng. This award-winning development is home to thousands of residents across its multi-phase apartment complex and is centred around a landmark crystal-clear sustainable lagoon — a South African first. The estate offers resort-style living with a fully equipped lifestyle centre, restaurant, spa, cinema, and gymnasium, making reliable, uninterrupted power not merely a convenience, but an operational necessity.

As load shedding became increasingly severe and prolonged across Tshwane, the estate's management recognised that the quality of life for residents was being materially compromised. Air conditioning, security systems, lifts, water infrastructure, and the lifestyle amenities that define The Blyde experience all depend on consistent electrical supply. The body corporate and estate management engaged SolarEPC to engineer a solution that would insulate residents from the impact of Eskom outages — entirely seamlessly.

The Challenge: Providing reliable backup power and cost-effective energy generation for a large-scale, high-density residential estate with diverse load profiles, multiple apartment blocks, and extensive common area infrastructure — all without disrupting residents during switchover events.

The Solution: SolarEPC's engineers collaborated closely with the estate's technical team to design and implement a comprehensive Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) comprising a 6.4 MWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery bank. The system features fully seamless automatic transfer, ensuring zero interruption to residents during load shedding events. The solution is also integrated with the estate's existing diesel generators, providing a multi-layered backup architecture that ensures continuity of supply regardless of outage duration.

Complementing the BESS, SolarEPC designed and installed a solar photovoltaic carport structure — incorporating all civil and mechanical engineering — which provides the estate with a cost-effective, low-carbon source of daytime energy generation. The carport structure makes productive use of parking infrastructure while simultaneously providing shade for residents' vehicles. All civil works, structural engineering, mechanical installation, and electrical integration were completed in-house by the SolarEPC team.

The result is an estate that is effectively insulated from South Africa's electricity supply challenges — protecting property values, maintaining resident satisfaction, and demonstrating that large-scale residential developments can lead the way in energy resilience.
